about

'Deep Blue' - the 2nd album made from text-to-audio AI samples. Out Oct 20th via 555-5555. //// linktr.ee/patttten

On October 20th, the electronic musician, visual artist, designer, and cultural researcher Damien Roach - aka patten - releases his second album of 2023, ‘Deep Blue’ via his imprint and one-man creative agency 555-5555. After April’s ground-breaking ‘Mirage FM’, (the first album made entirely from text-to-audio AI-generated sound sources,) just six months later, ‘Deep Blue’ takes the second ever text-to-audio AI album slot with an entirely different proposition.

Where ‘Mirage FM’ revelled in a heady, edge-of-collapse, genre-agnostic, collage-like set of aesthetics, ‘Deep Blue’ uses text to audio AI samples to create an uncannily human and naturalistic vision. Made using self-customised text to audio AI notebooks, a forensically detailed process of cutting and splicing the generated fragments, DSP, layering, and intensive post-production, across 9 concise tracks (including the constantly morphing 8 ½ minute opus ‘Burn Variation’), ‘Deep Blue’ turns its gaze skyward, like a holographic jazz ensemble laying down a set of life-affirming, blissed-out, emotionally charged jams.

Named after the infamous IBM supercomputer, (the first AI to beat a reigning human world champion at chess,) across its succinct 31 minute runtime, ‘Deep Blue’ offers yet another radical glimpse into the future of creativity in the age of AI, this time traversing latent space in search of the expressive human touch behind the ghost in the machine.

His second album of 2023, ‘Deep Blue’ follows April’s historic full length ‘Mirage FM’ (the first album made entirely from text-to-audio AI-generated sound sources), the 2019 LP of UK club excursions ‘FLEX’, the ‘Burner’ EP from 2021 (featuring Antipop Consortium’s Beans), and his trilogy of 2020 albums; the beatless ‘GLOW’, its melted down cybernetic metal counterpart ‘GLO)))’ and the collapsing techno of ‘Aegis’. In 2022 came the ‘Desire Path’ EP, which graced Bleep’s top tracks of the year with ‘Kiss U’.

In addition to the above, Roach’s CV includes numerous soundtracks, live commissions, cutting edge visual art projects, and creative direction/design under the moniker 555-5555. He recently created the visual world behind Dan Snaith’s Daphni releases, and the live visual shows for Caribou and Grammy-nominated Ninja Tune artist Jayda G. He is also currently undertaking a PhD in AI imaging, creativity, and perception at the RCA in London.
